Testing WANPIPE Back-to-Back

The Real World

A typical use of WANPIPEŽ using Frame Relay is shown below.  
Each machine on each LAN can have access to resources on any other LAN, as well as access to the Internet.

Each link to the Frame relay network needs a CSU/DSU (digital modem). In the case of WANPIPEŽ, the T1 (1.54Mbps) DSU/CSU is optionally integrated with the card.

However, you may not have access to a real network for testing. In that case, we provide facilities for back-to-back connections. Local testing is used by our customers to preconfigure and test systems before they are installed on the real network.

The following testing scenarios provide an exact model  of operation on a real network. The only limitation is that under Frame Relay you are obviously limited to connecting to only one remote.

WANPIPEŽ cards Back-to-back

Back-to-back with nul modem cabling

In this scenario, two WANPIPEŽ cards in two different servers connect two LANs. The 608 DCE cable is the standard DCE cable that comes with the product, while the 609 cable is designed to provide a connection between two DTE devices. The WANPIPEŽ card  connected to the 609 cable is set for Internal Clocking at a line speed of 1.6Mbps, and the other is set for External Clocking. Clocking for both sides comes from the right hand WANPIPEŽ system.

For a Frame Relay connection, one of these machines must be configured as an Access Node, while the other is set for a normal CPE operation. For PPP nothing special has to be done, as PPP is always peer-to-peer.

WANPIPEŽ to Third Party Router

Here a third party router is used instead of the second WANPIPEŽ card. Again, clocking at 1.6Mbps comes from the WANPIPEŽ on the right, and for Frame Relay this router must be set up as an Access Node.

Note that third party routers must be set up for Static Routing and must use Internet (IETF or RFC compliant) standards, not proprietary protocols. Turn off CHAP and PAP and compression.

Please note that WANPIPEŽ version 2.0.3 supports Cisco HDLC, a proprietary protocol that can replace PPP.

WANPIPEŽ to WANPIPEŽ using Integrated CSU/DSUs Back-to back

Back-to-back with S508/FT1 cards

WANPIPEŽ is optionally available with integrated T1 and Fractional T1 DSU/CSU units. These can also be connected back-to-back using a special "twisted" RJ45 cable. Set up one DSU/CSU using Sangoma's MS-DOS   CFG_FT1.EXE program so that it is set for Master Clock. The other is left at default values. Both WANPIPEŽ routers are set for External Clocking (The DSU/CSU units provide the clocking as if on a real network). Once again, for Frame relay, one side must be set up as Access Node.

The pinout of the "twisted" RJ45 cable is as follows:

Cut the cable in the middle and connect:

Line 1 of the one side (RTIP) to line 4 of the other side (TTIP)
Line 2 of the one side (RRING) to line 5 of the other side (TRING);
Connect both ways, so that you have a total of 4 cross connections.
